Integrating Marine Reserve Science and Fisheries Management

Long Beach, CA (June 2004)

Overview
In partnership with COMPASS, the National Fisheries Conservation Center (NFCC) convened and facilitated a Consensus Conference to address the integration of marine reserve science and fisheries management. Participants included fishermen, academics and agency scientists, conservation advocates and representatives of nonprofits. A 7-member review panel, made up of scientists and policy experts not currently engaged in research or advocacy in the field of marine reserves and chaired by Dr. Don Boesch, drafted a consensus statement. An earlier planning meeting for this conference occurred in November 2003 in San Francisco, and included participants from the same groups that attended the Consensus Conference.
