Using Case Studies to Advance a Practical Framework for Ecosystem-Based Management in Marine Systems

Portland, OR (April 2007)

Overview
A group of 27 scientists, lawyers, policy experts, practitioners, and managers gathered together in Portland from April 4-6, 2007 for a two day workshop to discuss how to execute ecosystem-based management (EBM) in the oceans. To achieve this goal, the group focused on three critical themes (integrated multi-sector management; multidisciplinary science required for EBM; and communication of complicated issues to stakeholders) and discussed EBM case studies, identified barriers to and facilitators of EBM, and compiled a series of next steps to aid EBM implementation.
