Scientific Perspectives on a Hot TopicJune 21, 2006Featuring Dr. Mark Carr, an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UC Santa Cruz, and Dr. Milton Love, a Research Biologist at the UC Santa Barbara's Marine Science Institute. Bill Craven, chief consultant to the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee, moderated the session. Background InformationThere are 27 oil platforms in use off the coast of southern and central California (June 2006). These platforms have a finite economic lifespan, and once they are no longer active, a decommissioning process will begin. This complex process involves several state and federal agencies, private corporations, interest groups and numerous stakeholders. One of many issues in this controversial process is the role that oil platforms play as fish habitat.PresentationsDr. Mark Carr discusses the ecological implications of different decommissioning strategies.Dr. Milton Love discusses the fish assemblages found on the oil platforms.
