Offshore Aquaculture: The Challenges and Opportunities of Farming California's Oceans

September 12, 2005

Featuring Dr. Rosamond Naylor, a Senior Fellow at Stanford University, Dr. Fred Conte, an Extension Faculty member and lecturer in the Department of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis, and Meg Caldwell, a senior lecturer at Stanford Law School, Chair of the California Coastal Commission, and a member of the California Blue Ribbon Task Force.

Background Information

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing sectors of the world food economy and an emerging marine issue in California. With its marine aquaculture initiative, the US Department of Commerce has set targets of $5 billion worth of aquaculture production and $2.5 billion in goods and services by 2025. While aquaculture production has traditionally been in coastal waters or inland areas, much of this increased production is expected to come from expansion of aquaculture into offshore waters in state and Federal jurisdictions. To date, the impacts of offshore aquaculture on the marine ecosystem are not well understood.
