Meetings & Events | Ocean Science Briefings Oregon Marine Science Luncheon SeriesMapping Oregon's Territorial SeafloorMay 24, 2007Featuring Dr. Dawn Wright, Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Oregon State University; and Dr. Vicki McConnell, Director of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. The speakers were introduced by Mike Carrier, Governor Kulongoski's Director of Natural Resource Policy and the discussion following the talks was moderated by Jessica Hamilton, the Governor's Natural Resource Policy Advisor on ocean issues. Background InformationCurrently, only 5% of Oregon's 900 square-mile territorial seafloor-extending 0 to 3 miles offshore-is mapped in detail. Seafloor mapping has numerous benefits, ranging from understanding tsunami behavior to the siting of wave energy parks, and is endorsed by Oregon's Ocean Policy Advisory Council. Oregon is fortunate to be home to world class mapping experts, thus making a mapping effort of the state's entire territorial sea an Oregon- based endeavor from top to bottom.Presentations"Mapping and Exploring the Hidden Oregon" (Wright)"Coastal Processes and Hazards-Practical uses of Bathymetry and Elevation Data" (McConnell) « Back to Oregon Marine Science Luncheon Series |
