Ocean Science Briefings

COMPASS sponsors Ocean Science Briefings in Washington, DC, Sacramento, CA, and Salem, OR to effectively and accurately communicate marine conservation science to policymakers and marine resource managers. Each session features presentations by prominent marine scientists and other researchers who are leaders in their fields of study. By creating a venue for lively discussion among scientists, policymakers and managers, these presentations help inform decision makers about the latest scientific research and accelerate the pace of finding solutions to important marine conservation problems. The Sacramento Luncheon Briefings are sponsored in partnership with the California State Library, and the Salem Luncheon Briefings are co-hosted by the Oregon State Lands Board. Both organizations have a regional focus on oceans and coasts, and address issues relevant to California's ocean and coasts. The Capitol Hill Series is coordinated in conjunction with the US House of Representatives Oceans Caucus and presents marine science that is relevant to national policy decisions. Recent Ocean Science Briefings have covered a wide range of topics, including the impact of carbon dioxide emissions on the marine environment, ecological considerations in the development of offshore aquaculture, and the potential evolutionary consequences of current fisheries management regimes.

The House Oceans Caucus Luncheon Series consists of informal lecture presentations by key marine scientists, providing a rare opportunity for Congress to learn about ocean research directly from scientists working at the forefront of new research.

Protecting California's Ocean and Coast: Luncheon Briefings on Science and Policy

In partnership with the California State Library, COMPASS designs and coordinates the Sacramento Luncheon Briefings to bring leading marine scientists from the California region to the state capitol, creating a key opportunity to inform state marine policies with the latest, peer-reviewed ocean research.

Oregon Marine Science Luncheon Series

COMPASS has partnered with Oregon's State Land Board to bring prominent marine scientists to the capitol to discuss and share relevant ocean science with legislators and agency staffs, helping decision makers infuse science into natural resource policy development.
