Communications Team

Who We Are

The Communications Team includes Nancy Baron (Director of Science Outreach), Liz Neeley (Assistant Director of Science Outreach), and Meghan Miner (Science Outreach Specialist). We share a background in academic science, but also have extensive experience in science writing, journalism, and teaching.

What We Do

The Communications Team helps scientists develop the skills they need to engage journalists and other non-scientist audiences. If science is not in the news, it is not seen as a social priority, and scientists have the potential to be the best spokespeople for their own research.

Trainings

Our training workshops teach scientists to talk about their work in a clear, engaging manner that will resonate with the media and policymakers. COMPASS workshops are based on the program we developed and lead for the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program, and we customize each to fit the specific needs of the host group.

Outreach

On a case-by-case basis, COMPASS helps scientists engage the media about high-profile, socially relevant papers published in top-tier journals. This can include help with submission materials, press releases, multimedia materials, connecting with journalists, and preparing for press briefings.

Meetings & Conferences

COMPASS helps scientists more effectively communicate their science at meetings by helping them prepare talks, rehearse for press briefings and make strategic connections with journalists. We also organize panel discussions and Marine Mixers that allow scientists to meet and engage with journalists and policymakers.

Personalized Coaching

Scientists often face communication challenges that are not well addressed by any of the above strategies. To bridge this gap, we offer personalized coaching for scientists on a case-by-case basis, dependent on your needs and our availability.
