Training and Coaching
Training and Coaching
We support scientists to develop the skills they need to engage journalists, policymakers and other non-scientist audiences. We recommend browsing a copy of "Escape from the Ivory Tower" written by Director of Science Outreach Nancy Baron, with support from the COMPASS team. This easy and inspiring read summarizes the practical advice to scientists we have shared through the years.
Trainings
Our trainings teach scientists to talk about their work in a clear, engaging manner that will resonate with the media and policymakers. COMPASS trainings are based on the program we developed and lead for the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program, and we customize each to fit the specific needs of the host group.
Personalized Coaching
Scientists often face communication challenges when papers are slated for high level publication, they are giving talks in visible and transformative settings, when they are called by journalists, or when they are invited to share perspectives to public officials. We offer personalized coaching for scientists on a case-by-case basis, dependent on your needs and our availability.
Meetings and Conferences
COMPASS helps scientists more effectively communicate their science at meetings by helping them prepare talks, rehearse for press briefings, and make strategic connections with journalists. We also organize panel discussions and social mixers that allow scientists to meet and engage with journalists and policymakers.
